Windows 10 Only: What Happens if You’re on Windows 7 or 8.1
What happens if you’re on Windows 7 or 8.1? If you’re currently using Office 2016, this change won’t affect you at all, but if you’re using Office 2013, your subscription will expire when the support period ends on October 13, 2025. Also, keep in mind that if you have an Office 365 subscription without the Office 2019 for Windows add-on, the apps won’t be available to install on your computer after October 13th either.
Why this Matters
If you’re using Windows 7 or 8.1, you may want to consider upgrading to Windows 10 before Microsoft stops offering its office suite for download in 2020. Microsoft will stop offering Office 2019 for download on December 31st, 2020, so now is the time to make that switch! If you’re on a version of Windows that won’t get a version of Office 2019, don’t worry – it’s not too late! In fact, now would be the perfect time to upgrade from Windows 7 or 8.1 to Windows 10 and receive your free year of Office 365 Personal (worth $100) as well as other great benefits like access to Xbox One and Xbox 360 games with Xbox Live Gold subscriptions and the ability to play Forza Horizon 3 with Play Anywhere.
How to Check which version of Windows are you on?
To check which version of windows you are using, open the run dialog box by pressing window key+R and type winver without quotes in the dialog box that opens. If it is not already selected, click the System Information tab at the top of the window that opens to view your system information and under System Summary look for OS Type. If you see a message like OS Type: 32-bit Operating System then this means that you are still running a 32-bit operating system and as such cannot install Microsoft Office 2019, whereas if you see OS Type: 64-bit Operating System this means that you have successfully installed a 64-bit operating system and can install Microsoft Office 2019.
What will happen if I’m running the wrong version of Windows?
If you are running a version of Windows that is not supported by Microsoft Office, you will not be able to upgrade to the newest version of Microsoft Office until you upgrade your operating system. This means that you will have to keep using the older, unsupported versions of Office, which will only work with the older OS versions and not the newer ones. However, some exceptions may exist. For example, if you purchase an Office 365 subscription but use it primarily in a Mac computer, it may be possible for you to continue using that subscription even after upgrading your Mac operating system to macOS Mojave (10.14) or later.
