C# Poised For A Jump Into The Top 3 In May 2022, According To TIOBE Index
What will the top programming languages be in 2022, according to the TIOBE Index? This month’s TIOBE Index, which gauges language popularity based on search engine results, might just give us an idea. TIOBE Index May 2022 sees Python as the world’s most popular language with 28.5 percent usage. Following closely behind are Java (24 percent), C (19 percent), and C++ (13 percent). But one language many would like to see break into the top 3 is C#.
Intro to the TIOBE Index
The TIOBE Programming Community index is an indicator of the popularity of programming languages. It is updated once a month. The ratings are based on the number of skilled engineers world-wide, courses and third party vendors. Popular search engines such as Google, Bing, Yahoo!, Wikipedia, Amazon, YouTube and Baidu are used to calculate the ratings. New languages are getting more popular while older ones lose their appeal to programmers at a certain point in time. C# has been gaining ground in recent years and may soon be considered one of the most popular languages for 2019 or 2020 according to the index. Currently sitting at #5, it would have to jump past Java and Visual Basic .NET to enter the top three with Python and PHP.
The reason behind Objective-C moving out of the third position
In the last few years, C# has been making a steady climb up the rankings. It passed C++ in 2012 and Delphi in 2014. With its latest rise this month to #6 on the list of most popular languages, it’s now poised to overtake Objective-C at #3 (for now) and Java at #2. This is due to both Java’s waning popularity (#8) as well as Objective-C’s relative stagnation (#4). We’ll have to wait until next year’s release of the TIOBE index before we know for sure. But if these numbers are any indication, then it would appear that C# will finally break into the top three. After passing C++ in 2012 and Delphi in 2014, with its latest leap this month to #6 on the list of most popular languages, it’s now within reach of overtaking Objective-C at #3 (for now) and Java at #2. When you look back over the history of programming languages since 1950, there’s never been an occurrence where one language leapt over another to such a dramatic degree without some kind of catastrophe ensuing first. For example: After World War II broke out in 1939 with Nazi Germany invading Poland from Europe, we see that both Fortran and Cobol displaced German as countries mobilized their efforts for war.
Current placement of C# in comparison with Objective-C and Rust
The C++ programming language has been on the top of the TIOBE index for quite some time now. However, it seems that other programming languages are catching up and may overtake C++ in the near future. C# is one of those languages and according to the latest TIOBE index, it is poised for a jump into the top 3 in May 2022. This development is not surprising considering that there are many things that contribute to a language’s popularity such as its usage statistics and GitHub activity. One example is Objective-C which although has lost more than 30% of its ranking since January 2019, still remains in the top 10 list.
The fact that C# can be used with Microsoft Visual Studio which can be downloaded free of charge also contributes to this success story. It was also voted as Programming Language Of The Year by IEEE Spectrum Magazine readers.
Conclusion – Will C# have an edge over other programming languages in the future?
The TIOBE index is a measure of the popularity of programming languages. It has been around since 2001 and it monitors trends in language usage on the internet.
The updated index for this month shows C# at number four with an increase of 0.8% to reach 4.4%. Java is still reigning at number one but Python also saw an improvement from 3rd to 2nd place with a growth in popularity by 1.7%. It will be interesting to see if C# will have an edge over other programming languages in the future as it continues its steady rise up the list!

The C# programming language has seen a jump in the newest TIOBE index for may and is poised to enter the top three languages. This would be a first for C# as it ranks 4th on the list at the moment. The rise in popularity of C# can be attributed to its use of some popular features such as Generics and Multithreading.
The TIOBE index is an indicator of popularity that measures search engine rankings for various programming languages. It is updated monthly and is different from other ranking systems because it only measures what people are actually searching for online. It gives an objective measure of which languages have the most traction at any given time across a variety of search engines including Google, Yahoo, Bing and Wikipedia among others.
